I do the same thing (on the same page once again lol) ~ I think for me it really is rooted in a difficulty with choosing, so if I demonize the old thing it makes it easier to move forward with the new thing rather than agonizing over the choice itself which is also a part of the cycle. Although I will say I fall into this cycle a lot less when my general wellbeing is handled (Shocking I know..)

This made me think of a Taylor Swift reference (I am only a recent "paying attention to Taylor Swift" person. I am not a lifelong Swiftie. I don't know why it feels like that needs to be said, but there I said it). Anyway, when she was talking about her Eras tour, she said something to the effect of "We always look back on our past selves and cringe. But that's who we were then and that's OK and what if we celebrated those former parts of ourselves instead." Not that we have to create a stadium show about them, but the not demonizing our past seems like a very good start.

lmao i like to say i am not a swiftie, but i did live in the country for a bit, so i know the language and customs, but i cannot claim citizenship or it makes the swifties angry. non-swifties roll their eyes at me and say i'm in denial, but i truly am not from that country.

so yeah, i understand why you explained!!!

and that's a lovely quote from her, thank you so much for this

I had a similar agony when in college: thinking I was wasting or wasted my time with certain majors or classes that didn’t pan out to a major or minor, when in reality that wasn’t the end goal. All paths are winding in journeys, and if they were just a straight line, it would be more of a track than a journey. The difference (to me, at least) is that a journey is where you learn more about yourself and life, a track you just learn. Both can be beneficial, but one definitely has a more profound impact.

And as someone who ended up with a psych degree, yes: life is the Sisyphean battle of managing your own psychology like a Rubik’s Cube that resets like that anxiety-inducing game Perfection 😂

this reminded me of hearing a song for the first time from The Vivian Girls, on YouTube - it was randomly recommended to me, and it was them performing "The End" on the street. I liked it so much in that raw form, that many weeks (probably months) later when I tried to listen to the recorded track it didn't even appeal to me. was it because it lacked the raw gritty feeling of it being performed live? that it was too perfect? maybe even lifeless? maybe. it makes me wonder about creation and art & how much emphasis is placed on a final form. when each version we create is its own final form.
